KRISTEN WIIG: <\/strong>What\u2019s up, Hamm?<\/p>\n JON HAMM:<\/strong> I have not seen you in forever, even though we just did the show together.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> Before that, it was a long time. We did not see each other during COVID; we followed the rules. I still follow them.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>We\u2019re six feet apart, and I\u2019m wearing a mask right now. It\u2019s just a mask that\u2019s my face.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> Why didn\u2019t anyone make those? \u201cJust send in a photo of your face.\u201d<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> A KN95, but with something fun on it.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Don\u2019t air this, because someone\u2019s going to steal it.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>We can retire on that one.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> Can I give you a compliment?<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> Sure. It may be the first time in your life.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>You are amazing on \u201cFargo\u201d and \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d \u2014 two different characters.<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> Very different. Shot at the same time.I was shooting on parallel tracks, flying back from Calgary to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about your character in \u201cFargo,\u201d who I heard you said was visually based on the Marlboro Man.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>That was Noah\u2019s hope. What he was trying to do was explode this idea of this rugged individualist that seems to be a very popular idea right now: a sovereign citizen, \u201cNo one can tell me what to do.\u201d This onanistic, narcissistic idea about what being an individual has to be: You\u2019re free from the constraints of government and society.<\/p>\n Well, of course, that\u2019s impossible. But there are people who subscribe to that. And when they take it to the extreme, this is what you get: the guy where the rules don\u2019t apply because he makes the rules. I think it\u2019s a cautionary tale; we need to live in a society that has rules. And we can point to one obvious orange example of that right now, who\u2019s kind of bumping up against the rules as well.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Did you know how it would end?<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t think it was going to end great for my guy. You couldn\u2019t have that guy get away scot-free.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>When we meet Roy \u2014 you have quite an entrance, or should I say a \u201crising up\u201d out of the water. You are in full nipple piercings.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>Completely naked. I was wearing a little thing around my junk. A sock around my junk. A junk sock. There\u2019s a process of making fake nipples that stick onto my real nipples that have little earrings in them.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Was it like an adhesive? What are we talking here?<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>It\u2019s a little latex situation. There\u2019s a picture of me with two little blue latex things on my nipples that I\u2019ll send you. And then on the day, I\u2019m going to sit in this hot tub with a weird beige bag around my junk.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Was it cold?<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>It was a hot tub. It was nice. But the backdrop of the mountains and what is meant to be the upper Midwest was actually filmed in Calgary in freezing cold \u2014 minus 20 degrees.<\/p>\n Speaking of cold, \u201cPalm Royale.\u201d It didn\u2019t look cold. The opposite of cold. Warm? I\u2019d like to go with warm.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> Great segue.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>Tell me about how it came about. I haven\u2019t finished it.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> That\u2019s OK \u2014 I haven\u2019t finished yours either.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>But I am watching and loving it. This means we haven\u2019t seen any of it.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>This means we watched the trailer. But you know what? Just watch how we fake it.<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> Fake it till you make it. But how did it come about? You didn\u2019t write it.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> It came to me through this actress. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve heard of her \u2014 her name is Laura Dern.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>Oh, Bruce Dern\u2019s kid. It\u2019s amazing because it\u2019s so midcentury and feels of that time. It must have been a fun place to be.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>It was. And I obviously learned more about it after being part of the show. Slim Aarons photos and things like this. Nowhere else in the country were they dressed like that. It\u2019s this weird vortex of pastels and day drinking.<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> It\u2019s such an amazing cast to be able to hang in that space with. Especially with Carol Burnett, who lived through it.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> I could talk about Carol Burnett for 20 minutes. She\u2019s a fucking legend. I grew up watching her. She influenced so many people in sketch comedy. And being a woman at that time, with her own show. She shows up on set, she\u2019s talking to everyone, she knows everyone\u2019s name, she\u2019s telling stories. She hangs out on set and just talks to people. And she\u2019s such a light \u2014 people lit up around her.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>I like to hear that. Because all the things we\u2019ve worked on together, part of it is to not get too jaded or too over it or feel like, \u201cUgh, I\u2019ve got to be here.\u201d We get to be here. It\u2019s such a gift to be able to do what we do. I still love doing it.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Me too.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>When they called and asked if I could do your \u201cSNL\u201d when you hosted for the fifth time \u2014 congratulations! \u2014 I was like, there\u2019s never an answer that doesn\u2019t rhyme with \u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>You could have gone with \u201cNah.\u201d That kind of rhymes.<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> Any time you say, \u201cCome do anything,\u201d I\u2019ll do it. When you said, \u201cPlease be in \u2018Bridesmaids,\u2019\u201d I was like, \u201cSure.\u201d And you were like, \u201cWe haven\u2019t written a part yet.\u201d<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>And we had so much fun. It\u2019s so funny because obviously you\u2019re known for Don Draper at that point. People are known for that thing<\/em>, and when there\u2019s something else, people are so surprised.<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> I think happily. It\u2019s like a discovery.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Because it\u2019s like, \u201cAnd he\u2019s funny!\u201d When you did \u201cSNL\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> Do you remember? On Monday, when you come in as the host, there was a big meeting in Lorne\u2019s office. And all the writers are there, and the cast is there, and everybody jams into the small office, and everybody was in \u201cMad Men\u201d drag. Which was very strange.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>We never do that. I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever done it since.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>Bill Hader was in drag. Paula Pell had a cigarette taped to her finger because she didn\u2019t know how to smoke. Colin Jost is two years out of Harvard and looks like a total Staten Island dirtbag.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>Do you remember that group? \u201cMad Men,\u201d \u201cThe Office,\u201d \u201cSNL\u201d \u2014 we kind of all ran with each other.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>Everybody gelled at the same time. It was such a moment in time of distilled fun.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> You were always so game when you came to the show.<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> I hosted three times in two years and then never again. The fun part of \u201cSNL\u201d \u2014 one time I was hosting, and we both had quick changes next to each other. And you\u2019re like, \u201cGet ready,\u201d and then we\u2019re both naked. They\u2019re literally tearing clothes off of you. You just have to go with it.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>The last time I was back, I had a quick change. They were stripping me, and I looked over, and Kenan [Thompson] was doing the same thing. I was like, \u201cOh, we\u2019ve seen each other.\u201d<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>All of the parts. It\u2019s fine. It\u2019s only awkward because you have to submit to it. You\u2019re a total mannequin.<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>The \u201cin-between sketches\u201d is the most interesting \u2014 it\u2019s such a beautiful dance.<\/p>\n HAMM: <\/strong>And you never see the seams. My first time hosting was right in the middle of [your time]. And then I hosted three times, and we worked together so much. And then I was at your last show, which was so awesome and fun and, I\u2019m sure, tremendously emotional for you.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> I was so emotional that week. I cried during read-through, I sobbed after readthrough, and I just didn\u2019t want to cry on air. And I didn\u2019t really, even though it was one of the most emotional nights of my life. And then with Five-Timers, I surprised myself that I got a little emotional at the end. I still can\u2019t even explain why. The other times I\u2019ve hosted, it\u2019s weird to go back, seeing the other side of the curtain.<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> Everybody that I know that\u2019s gone back and hosted, from Tina [Fey] to Bill [Hader] to you, has said it\u2019s a real mindfuck. It\u2019s a weird gear shift.<\/p>\n WIIG:<\/strong> Do you find as you\u2019ve gotten older and worked more, you gravitate toward the things that are more joyful and fun?<\/p>\n HAMM:<\/strong> Well, yeah, because there\u2019s so many definitions of that. For \u201cFargo,\u201d I\u2019ll go play a bad guy who\u2019s morally reprehensible, who has all of these terrible things about him, in the freezing cold, but I\u2019m still having fun. To lean into the aspect of it that is joyful and fun, I think that resonates off the screen. And when I look at your career, every time I see you in something, I\u2019ll say, \u201cOh, my God, you\u2019re so good in this.\u201d<\/p>\n WIIG: <\/strong>There\u2019re some things you haven\u2019t reached out about. We haven\u2019t talked about \u201cThe Morning Show,\u201d which I love.
