Ryan Gosling returned to \u201cSNL\u201d this week in a cold open with \u201cBarbie\u201d co-star Kate McKinnon, reviving one of their most famous sketches, \u201cClose Encounter,\u201d in which they recount being abducted by aliens and their vastly different experiences aboard the spaceship.<\/p>\n

The original sketch debuted eight years ago and featured Gosling and McKinnon, alongside Cecily Strong (it currently has 60 million views on YouTube). The actor also recreated this sketch on his second time hosting six years ago. In every attempt to act through \u201cClose Encounter\u201d Gosling has heroically attempted to get through McKinnon\u2019s genius bit without breaking, every time he has failed. Endearingly, Gosling broke again at least once during this one.<\/p>\n

Bowen Yang and Mike Day played NSA investigators in tonight\u2019s cold open. Day tells Gosling, McKinnon, and Sarah Sherman, \u201cNow you\u2019re all here because you\u2019ve experienced a verified alien abduction.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the camera pans to McKinnon, Gosling, and Sherman, the crowd inside Studio 8H screams with delight as the familiar scene is set. McKinnon is wearing her character Colleen\u2019s trademark jeans, a disheveled brown wig, and a dangling cigarette.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was wild,\u201d says Sherman. \u201cOne second, we\u2019re three friends on a camping trip and the next, we\u2019re citizens of the stars.\u201d Gosling says, \u201cAnd sir, before we begin, can I say something? I\u2019m just realizing that I was wearing the same outfit last time I was here,\u201d he says, touching his trademark navy and tan vest. On the verge of breaking, Gosling adds, \u201cI just want you to know I do have other clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yang, dressed in a suit, asks, \u201cNow, how were you all brought on board the craft?\u201d Sherman describes being hit with a warm, soft light. \u201cAnd then we materialized onto the spaceship in front of these two glowing beams,\u201d she recalls, looking at Gosling.<\/p>\n

Gosling, as Todd says, \u201cOur clothes were gone, but we were wearing these comfy robes made of transparent light,\u201d he recalls, unable to contain a smile.<\/p>\n

Sitting wide-legged and smoking a cigarette, McKinnon\u2019s character, Colleen, tells a different story. \u201cAnd you, Ms. Rafferty?\u201d prompts Day. \u201cLittle different for me. I was by the lake, taking a whore bath\u2026and out of nowhere, I get sucked up by a giant vacuum cleaner.\u201d McKinnon mimics a vacuum suction with full body force and adds, \u201cAnd I land on the ship, still pantsless, mind you\u2026\u201d She describes how she sees her \u201cold buddies, the gray aliens with the big dumb eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fumbling her lines briefly, McKinnon recovers saying, \u201cAnd it hits me, I\u2019ve been on this spaceship more times than I\u2019ve been to the dentist,\u201d she says, inhaling a puff from her cigarette.<\/p>\n

The investigators ask what happened once aboard the ship. Sherman describes the aliens teaching her a \u201cuniversal language\u201d of love. Gosling adds, \u201cTheir language is like a soothing, beautiful sound,\u201d and then proceeds to make the alien sounds. McKinnon says, \u201cNow this gets my goat, because these two are getting AMSR love tingles. Meanwhile, the greys and I are doing our usual dance.\u201d<\/p>\n

McKinnon describes the aliens prodding her body, and imitating the aliens, she breaks character. \u201cAnyway, that\u2019s when Todd here showed up!\u201d she says. Gosling recounts leaving the beams of light. \u201cI got lost, sir, on the way to the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked how the aliens reacted when he walked into the room, Gosling, on the verge of breaking, says, \u201cLike middle schoolers meeting Taylor Swift. They just lobbed me.\u201d Gosling, totally breaking, goes on to describe the anatomy of the aliens. \u201cYou know, they\u2019re smooth down there. Like a broken doorbell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gosling, laughing, says, \u201cWhen they saw I was packing a troll nose [in my see-through robe], they went for it.\u201d McKinnon echoes this, emphasizing \u201ctroll nose.\u201d Day interrupts, \u201cI\u2019ve never heard the term \u2018troll nose\u2019 before.\u201d And Gosling says, \u201cYou must be hanging out at a different bowling alley than we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yang asks the group, \u201cThat we stop saying troll nose.\u201d Gosling\u2019s Todd asks, \u201cDuring this or forever?\u201d<\/p>\n

Huddled together, Gosling, McKinnon, Sherman, Yang, and Day crowd in front of the camera shouting those famous seven words, \u201cLive from New York, it\u2019s Saturday night!\u201d<\/p>\n
