Sydney Sweeney said in a recent interview with GQ UK that starring in Sony\u2019s \u201cMadame Web\u201d was a \u201cstrategic business decision\u201d that more or less paid off despite the film being one of the year\u2019s most infamous box office flops. In Sweeney\u2019s eyes, \u201cMadame Web\u201d got her in the door at Sony Pictures and that\u2019s where she was able to have a massive box office success with the romantic comedy \u201cAnyone but You.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, that film was a building block, it\u2019s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony,\u201d Sweeney told the publication. \u201cWithout doing\u00a0\u2018Madame Web\u2019\u00a0I wouldn\u2019t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell\u00a0\u2018Anyone but You.\u2019 I was able to get\u00a0\u2018Barbarella.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMadame Web\u201d was widely panned by film critics earlier this year and it flopped at the box office, where it still hasn\u2019t crossed the $100 million mark worldwide. It\u2019s a far cry from the hit Sweeney delivered with \u201cAnyone but You,\u201d a romantic comedy co-starring Glen Powell that opened in December and generated $214 million worldwide for Sony Pictures. Sweeney said she was able to get \u201cAnyone but You\u201d off the ground because of the Sony connections she made from signing on to \u201cMadame Web.\u201d She\u2019s also developing a \u201cBarbarella\u201d remake at Sony that she is expected to star in.<\/p>\n

\u201c[\u2018Madame Web\u2019] is such a large movie with so many people involved,\u201d Sweeney added to GQ UK about the superhero flop. \u201cI was just hired as an actor and happy to bring to life a character that my little cousins are excited about. There\u2019s no outcome I can control on a film like that, especially when I\u2019m not a producer. You sign up for whatever happens and you take the ride\u2026There\u2019s definitely a different formula when you\u2019re making a film like that, that was very different from what I\u2019m used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney starred in \u201cMadame Web\u201d as Julia Cornwall, an iteration of Spider-Woman.\u00a0The film sets up Julia for future films where she can be a superhero, and Sweeney had this to say when asked about returning to the role: \u201cI think that if the story is right and you have the right team, I would love to.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a recent interview with Variety<\/em>, Sweeney stressed that she wants to continue to act in films that she also produces so that she can have some of the authority that she lacked on a project like \u201cMadame Web.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be as involved in the process for any project moving forward that I possibly can,\u201d she said. \u201cI love being in the room to be able to problem-solve, and come up with ideas. It\u2019s so important to have multiple people at the table instead of just one \u2014 everybody who can be collaborative and truly help build a project. It takes everybody. On \u2018Madame Web,\u2019 it was so hard not being able to be as involved as I love being. And I felt very free with \u2018Anyone but You\u2019 and \u2018Immaculate\u2019 being able to have that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMadame Web\u201d became such a punching bag on social media after its release that Sweeney herself\u00a0joked about it on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d\u00a0(\u201cYou definitely didn\u2019t see me in \u2018Madame Web,\u2019\u201d she said), while Jimmy Kimmel even\u00a0had a \u201cMadame Web\u201d dig\u00a0in his monologue at the Oscars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people in this room somehow managed to come up with so many excellent films and memorable performances,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cThis night is full of enormous talent, and untold potential, but so was \u2018Madame Web.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney\u2019s \u201cMadame Web\u201d co-star Dakota Johnson\u00a0told Bustle earlier this month\u00a0that the reception to the movie did not come as a shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was definitely an experience for me to make that movie,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don\u2019t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it\u2019s one thing and then as you\u2019re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you\u2019re like,\u00a0\u2018Wait, what?\u2019\u00a0But it was a real learning experience, and of course, it\u2019s not nice to be a part of something that\u2019s ripped to shreds, but I can\u2019t say that I don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMadame Web\u201d continues to play in theaters nationwide from Sony. Sweeney\u2019s new film, \u201cImmaculate,\u201d opens in theaters March 22 from Neon.<\/p>\n
