Both \u201cBarbie\u201d and \u201c<strong>Oppenheimer<\/strong>\u201d ruled the summer of 2023 (over blockbusters like \u201c<strong>The Flash<\/strong>,\u201d \u201c<strong>Mission Impossible 7<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>The Little Mermaid<\/strong>\u201d) and, of course, merged to make the theatrical phenomenon of #BarbieHeimmer. In fact, \u201cBarbie\u201d grossed $1.4 billion dollars to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023, a figure that just won\u2019t be topped this year.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by <strong>Greta Gerwig<\/strong>, what was thrilling about \u201cBarbie\u201d for many was how it took an iconic toy brand and subverted it, making a big piece of summer entertaining, funny, and delightful, and imbued it without thoughtful existentialist ideas of identity, empowerment and discovering who we are.<\/p>\n<p>Given the movie\u2019s wild success, there has been talk of sequels, spin-offs, and all kinds of potential for more. But in a recent interview with the film\u2019s star and producer, <strong>Margot Robbie<\/strong>, who was the one that brought the material to Gerwig in the first place, she suggests maybe a sequel is unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we put everything we had into this one,\u201d Robbie told the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/APEntertainment\/status\/1725541806191079534?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Associated Press<\/a> this week. \u201cWe didn\u2019t build it to be a trilogy or something. [Director] Greta [Gerwig] put everything into this movie, so I can\u2019t imagine what would be next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If this is indeed the new thinking, fans will undoubtedly be disappointed, not to mention <strong>Warner Bros<\/strong>. and Mattel, and one wonders if the companies would go ahead without this creative team regardless.<\/p>\n<p>Robbie sang a different tune earlier this summer, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6289864\/barbie-time-cover-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Time<\/a> magazine<em>\u00a0<\/em>that sequel directions could be <em>endless.<\/em> \u201cIt could go a million different directions from this point,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig herself seems to be moving on as she already has a \u201c<strong>Chronicles Of Narnia<\/strong>\u201d movie set up on Netflix, which is supposed to be next.<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s also flip-flopped, telling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/25\/movies\/greta-gerwig-barbie-movie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times<\/a>\u00a0around the time of release that she didn\u2019t have ideas for more. \u201cI feel like that at the end of every movie, like I\u2019ll never have another idea, and everything I\u2019ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn\u2019t want to squash anybody else\u2019s dream, but for me, at this moment, I\u2019m at totally zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in August, Gerwig told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/what-greta-gerwig-said-about-barbie-sequels-before-it-made-1-billion-dollars-7570717?utm_campaign=peoplemagazine&amp;utm_content=new&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_term=64d156ab4127ea0001e66d76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>she would be open to the idea. \u201cThere\u2019s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful,\u201d Gerwig said. \u201cI\u00a0want to\u00a0go back to \u2018Barbie\u2019 Land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Either way, \u2018Narnia\u2019 is probably coming first, and if a \u201cBarbie\u201d sequel does arrive, it might not be for years later. That could be a good thing, given how we\u2019re seeing superhero oversaturation hurt the product. Then again, waiting too long causes you to lose momentum.
