In other years, there is a potential laundry list of movies trying to make the cut. 2024 looks like it will be somewhat (and an emphasis on \u201csomewhat\u201d) closer to the latter. The one thing we know for sure is that the \u201cBarbeheimer\u201d duo of <strong>\u201cBarbie\u201d <\/strong>and <strong>\u201cOppenheimer\u201d<\/strong> are pretty safe Best Picture nominee bets. And that will make both the Academy and broadcast partner ABC very happy.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond those two blockbusters, the safest Best Picture nominee selections include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labiennale.org\/en\/news\/official-awards-80th-venice-flm-festival\"><strong>Venice<\/strong> Golden Lion winner<strong> \u201cPoor Things\u201d<\/strong><\/a> as well as <strong>Cannes<\/strong> players<strong> \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d <\/strong>and Palme d\u2019Or winner <strong>\u201cAnatomy of a Fall.\u201d <\/strong>Then things get slightly trickier. Another Cannes favorite, <strong>\u201cThe Zone of Interest,\u201d<\/strong> should make the cut. <strong>Alexander Payne\u2019<\/strong>s comeback, <strong>\u201cThe Holdovers,\u201d<\/strong> was a hit at <strong>Telluride<\/strong> with a ton of Academy members there to spread good buzz and it\u2019s hard to imagine <strong>Netflix <\/strong>not getting <strong>\u201cMaestro\u201d <\/strong>across the nomination finish line. <strong>\u201cPast Lives\u201d <\/strong>was the rage out of <strong>Sundance<\/strong>, but didn\u2019t exactly enjoy a ton of industry buzz during its summer release (although its $10.9 million domestic box office is a good sign).<\/p>\n<p>Then there is <strong>\u201cThe Color Purple,\u201d <\/strong>the Broadway musical adaptation of<strong> Alice Walker<\/strong>\u2018s novel that is returning to the screen with Tony Award winner<strong> Danielle Brooks<\/strong> but hasn\u2019t been screened yet. <strong>\u201cAll of Us Strangers\u201d <\/strong>was another Telluride hit that has struck a chord with many and could be a quiet nominee in the wings waiting to pounce.
