Variety reports (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/books\/what-to-read\/alan-moore-comic-books-black-lives-matter-watchmen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Telegraph<\/a>) that the comics writer and novelist no longer wants anything to do with any adaptations\u00a0<strong>DC Studios<\/strong>\u00a0does with his work. In fact, he\u2019d rather they send his royalty checks to Black Lives Matter instead since they betray his works \u201coriginal principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news should come as no surprise for those familiar with Moore. He\u2019s frequently critical of adaptations of his work and the contemporary superhero movie craze. But refusing royalties takes the writer\u2019s curmudgeonly stance to another level entirely. When The Telegraph asked if he still divides the money he makes from film and TV adaptations of his work, Moore corrected the publication. \u201cI no longer wish it to even be shared with them,\u201d he explained. \u201cI don\u2019t really feel, with the recent films, that they have stood by what I assumed were their original principles. So I asked for DC Comics to send all of the money from any future TV series or films to Black Lives Matter.\u201d Moore continued that he\u2019s not interested in money and instead chooses to live in seclusion in Northampton, England, where he\u2019s lived his entire life.<\/p>\n<p>Moore has been exceedingly vocal about superhero movies and the state of the entertainment industry in recent years. Back in 2020, he told <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/10\/alan-moore-rare-interview-watchmen-creator-the-show-superhero-movies-blighted-culture-1234594526\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deadline<\/a> that he considers superhero movies a \u201cblight\u201d to cinema and \u201calso to culture to a degree.\u201d He followed that up with more pointed words while on his press tour for his short story collection \u201c<strong>Illuminations<\/strong>\u201d last Fall. Regarding\u00a0<strong>Damon Lindelof<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0<strong>HBO<\/strong>\u00a0series \u201c<strong>Watchmen<\/strong>,\u201d Moore told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/alan-moore-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GQ<\/a> that he \u201cdisowned the work in question, and partly that was because the film industry and the comics industry seemed to have created things that had nothing to do with my work, but which would be associated with it in the public mind. I said, \u2018Look, this is embarrassing to me. I don\u2019t want anything to do with you or your show. Please don\u2019t bother me again.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Moore went even further in an October 2022 interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2022\/oct\/07\/watchmen-author-alan-moore-im-definitely-done-with-comics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>. He told that publication that the superhero crazy operates as a cultural \u201cinfantilization\u201d and also \u201ca precursor to fascism.\u201d And Moore takes some of the blame for the current state of comic books and superhero popularity. \u201cHundreds of thousands of adults lining up to see characters and situations that had been created to entertain the 12-year-old boys \u2014 and it was always boys \u2014 of 50 years ago,\u201d he continued. \u201cI didn\u2019t really think that superheroes were adult fare. I think that this was a misunderstanding born of what happened in the 1980s \u2014 to which I must put my hand up to a considerable share of the blame, though it was not intentional \u2014 when things like \u201cWatchmen\u201d were first appearing. There were an awful lot of headlines saying \u2018Comics Have Grown Up.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore doesn\u2019t agree with that assessment. \u201cI tend to think that, no, comics hadn\u2019t grown up,\u201d he continued. \u201cThere were a few titles that were more adult than people were used to\u2026I will always love and adore the comics medium but the comics industry and all of the stuff attached to it just became unbearable.\u201d In his more recent interview with The Telegraph, Moore said whatever appealed to him about comics books is \u201cno more.\u201d \u201cNow they\u2019re called \u2018graphic novels\u2019, which sounds sophisticated and you can charge a lot more for them,\u201d added the writer. \u201cThese innocent and inventive and imaginative superhero characters from the \u201940s, \u201950s and \u201960s are being recycled to a modern audience as if they were adult fare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, suffice it to say that Moore will likely continue his recent creative trend of literary fiction instead of returning to comic books. And since he no longer receives royalties from films and TV shows made of his work, it\u2019s almost as if he\u2019s entirely severed himself from his superhero past. Again, this isn\u2019t a major surprise for those familiar with Moore. But it\u2019s refreshing to see an artist devoted to their principles and stick up for his work\u2019s integrity in the face of an industry ultimately concerned with generating revenue.
