Woody Allen received a three-minute standing ovation at the Venice premiere of \u201cCoup de Chance\u201d on Monday night, which would have gone on longer had the filmmaker not started to exit. After two minutes and 30 seconds of sustained applause once the film finished, Allen began to make his way toward the door, cutting the standing ovation short. The filmmaker looked visibly moved during the reaction and at one point took out a tissue.<\/p>\n

Allen was greeted in the theater by a standing ovation before the movie even screened as fans tried to catch video of him. The reception was the same on the red carpet, with fans cheering him on enthusiastically \u2014 however, just outside the carpet a group of protesters walked by. According to social media posts, the protesters removed their shirts and handed out sheets of paper encouraging the fest to \u201cturn the spotlight off of rapists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year the Biennale Venice Film Festival has decided to give space to Woody Allen, Luc Besson and Roman Polanski, three directors involved in sexual violence against women, including minors,\u201d the note added, according to the posts.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with Variety<\/em> ahead of the film\u2019s world premiere, Allen teased that \u201cCoup de Chance,\u201d his 50th feature, might be his last as he is growing tired of hustling to secure financial backing for his projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have so many ideas for films that I would be tempted to do it, if it was easy to finance,\u201d he said. \u201cBut beyond that, I don\u2019t know if I have the same verve to go out and spend a lot of time raising money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Variety <\/em>film critic Owen Gleiberman called \u201cCoup de Chance\u201d Allen\u2019s best movie since \u201cBlue Jasmine\u201d in his review out of Venice, adding, \u201cThe film has a jaunty tone of deadpan glee, abetted by its soundtrack of \u201960s and \u201970s jazz standards. It\u2019s not a comedy, but as you watch it you can almost see Woody Allen standing off to side, chuckling at the human folly he\u2019s showing you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Written and directed by Allen, \u201cCoup de Chance\u201d is a French-language thriller in the vein of \u201cMatch Point\u201d that follows a beautiful couple living in Paris come undone by the arrival of a former flame. The cast includes Lou de Laage, Valerie Lemercier, Melvil Poupaud and Niels Schneider.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoup de Chance\u201d is Allen\u2019s first directorial effort since 2020\u2019s \u201cRifkin\u2019s Festival,\u201d which did not have a proper theatrical release in North America, nor did his 2019 comedy \u201cA Rainy Day in New York,\u201d which featured starry talent like Timothee Chalamet, Selena Gomez and Elle Fanning. Theatrical distributors in the U.S. have largely avoided Allen since the #MeToo movement resurfaced Dylan Farrow\u2019s allegations of child molestation against him.<\/p>\n

As Variety<\/em> reported before the film\u2019s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, \u201cCoup de Chance\u201d landed French distribution through Metropolitan FilmExport. There had been rumors that Allen was eyeing the Cannes Film Festival for a premiere for the movie, but Venice ended up taking the title instead. Allen previously described \u201cCoup de Chance\u201d as a \u201cpoisonous romantic thriller.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCoup de Chance\u201d currently does not have U.S. distribution.<\/p>\n
