No such worries for this movie, though, as it\u2019s part of Hollywood\u2019s meme-worthy one-two punch at the box-office with <strong>Greta Gerwig<\/strong>\u2018s \u201c<strong>Barbie<\/strong>.\u201d And while \u201cBarbie\u201d will surely win the box-office battle between the two films this weekend, \u201cOppenheimer\u201d has the lead right now in critical consensus, sitting at a 94% rating on <strong>Rotten Tomatoes<\/strong> against a 90% for Gerwig\u2019s latest. That ties Nolan\u2019s 94% rating for 2008\u2019s \u201c<strong>The Dark Knight<\/strong>\u201d as his most well-received film of his career.<\/p>\n<p>That comes as no surprise to \u201cOppenheimer\u201d star <strong>Cillian Murphy<\/strong>, who couldn\u2019t think more highly of Nolan\u2019s new film. \u201cI think it\u2019s the best script I ever read,\u201d Murphy told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.co.uk\/film\/features\/the-quiet-passion-of-cillian-murphy-peaky-blinders-oppenheimer-29064\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a> about the picture. And Murphy knew the film would be a tour de force after he received the script and realized it was written entirely in the first person from Oppenheimer\u2019s point of view. \u201cHe wanted it to be solely from Oppenheimer\u2019s perspective,\u201d continued Murphy. \u201cAnd I think the film is sensational. As a person who loves films \u2014 I\u2019m not saying it \u2019cos I\u2019m in the fucking thing, I hate looking at myself \u2014\u00a0 but as a lover of film, as a cinephile, I\u2019m a Chris Nolan fan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOppenheimer\u201d is the first time Murphy serves as leading man for Nolan. And playing the nuclear physicist is a dream come true for the actor, considering how complicated a character he is. Nolan thought Murphy would be perfect for the role for several reasons. \u201cHis ability to project power applies in a completely different way to a character like Oppenheimer, because Oppenheimer is this extraordinary strategic brain,\u201d Nolan told RS. \u201cThere are all these levels of intention that are going on with the actions he\u2019s taking, and he\u2019s surrounded by people. So, the audience becomes members of this community who are hanging on to his every word, studying his every gesture, to try and understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And despite being three hours long, Murphy dropped an unbelievable nugget about the production of \u201cOppenheimer\u201d on the <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/5NpgmEgZJuQ4XVFcdjrNx2?go=1&amp;sp_cid=21b4d04fab07e235f05219a2d1f815d3&amp;utm_source=embed_player_v&amp;utm_medium=desktop&amp;nd=1\">WTF podcast<\/a>: Nolan shot the entire film in less than two months. \u201cWe made the movie unbelievably quickly. We made it in 57 days,\u201d the actor revealed. \u201cThe pace of that was insane.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/film\/news\/oppenheimer-shot-57-days-cillian-murphy-pace-insane-1235672356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Variety<\/a> has some context there. It took Nolan 68 days to shoot 2017\u2019s war movie \u201c<strong>Dunkirk<\/strong>,\u201d and 96 days to shoot \u201c<strong>Tenet<\/strong>.\u201d But Murphy wasn\u2019t surprised by how expedited the shoot was on \u201cOppenheimer.\u201d He knows from experience that Nolan shoots quickly and efficiently. \u201cThe sets are huge, but it feels like being on an independent movie,\u201d Murphy added about working with Nolan, which he has been doing for over 20 years now. \u201cThere\u2019s just Chris and the cameraman \u2014 one camera always, unless there\u2019s some huge, huge set piece \u2014 and the boom op and that\u2019s it. There\u2019s no video village, there\u2019s no monitors, nothing. He\u2019s a very analog filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not to say shooting \u201cOppenheimer\u201d wasn\u2019t intense for Murphy. The actor told <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/07\/cillian-murphy-interview-oppenheimer-christopher-nolan-1235443235\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deadline<\/a> that sometimes shoots when for 18 hours a day, and Murphy couldn\u2019t eat a great deal on set because he needed to remain in character, i.e.: skinny. \u201cBut, you know, it affects you completely,\u201d Murphy said about shooting the film. \u201cIf you do anything intensely for 17, 18 hours a day like we were working on\u00a0\u201cOppenheimer\u201d \u2013 it was an incredibly fast shoot, it was like 57 days we shot the whole thing \u2013 if you do anything that intensely for that length of time a day, it\u2019s gonna affect you. And then also I had to get really skinny for it so I wasn\u2019t really eating, so you get to this very sort of hysterically lucid state of mind, but it\u2019s an amazing feeling \u2013 you feel completely immersed in it and completely focused in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not as if Murphy didn\u2019t enjoy making the film, though. He\u2019s used to how Nolan works at this point. \u201cChris moves at a really fast pace, there\u2019s no one standing around kind of shooting the shit or talking,\u201d the actor continued. \u201cWhen you come on the set at 7 and you wrap at whatever time, it\u2019s constant work \u2013 there\u2019s no waiting around cause Chris knows exactly what he wants and he moves at an incredibly fast pace so he expects everyone else to move at that pace, but you feel wonderfully exhausted at the end of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And now Murphy and Nolan get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Given the film\u2019s initial critical acclaim, don\u2019t be surprised if \u201cOppenheimer\u201d gets Nolan Best Picture nominations during awards season this winter. And as for Murphy?
