Focus Features\u00a0and Working Title have released the first trailer for\u00a0Ethan Coen\u00a0and Tricia Cooke\u2019s comedy caper \u201cDrive-Away Dolls.\u201d The comedy is set to open in theaters on Sept. 22.<\/p>\n

The film follows Jamie, played by Margaret Qualley, who is an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Variety, <\/em>Coen described the film as \u201cfilthy fun\u201d and a \u201cchase intrigue movie. In one word, it\u2019s a comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooke adds the film is a queer film with Jamie and Marian\u2019s relationship dynamic also featured as part of the narrative. She says, \u201cI\u2019m queer, and I\u2019ve always identified as queer. Making a queer movie that was fun, playful and didn\u2019t take itself too seriously especially back when we wrote it in 2002 seemed like a really fun and interesting idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

It features an impressive cast that includes Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and Matt Damon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe actors sink their teeth into it and they just have fun with it, and they go to town with it,\u201d says Coen.<\/p>\n

Thanks to HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Last of Us,\u201d Pascal has become a phenomenon since the film was shot. Says Cooke, \u201cHe\u2019s fascinating to watch and his upward trajectory. Everyone was talking about him right after we finished shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coen, the Oscar-winning director and screenwriter of \u201cFargo\u201d and \u201cNo Country for Old Men,\u201d is making the film without his brother and frequent collaborator Joel Coen. It\u2019s not their first time working on solo projects, though \u2014 Joel Coen adapted \u201cThe Tragedy of Macbeth\u201d in 2021 with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.<\/p>\n

Cooke has worked as an editor or associate editor on many of the\u00a0Coen brothers\u2019 films, including \u201cO Brother, Where Art Thou?\u201d and \u201cThe Man Who Wasn\u2019t There.\u201d She says the inspiration for the film was the 1992 film \u201cPoison Ivy\u201d starring Drew Barrymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s that kind of movie where the plot is fun,\u201d adds Coen.<\/p>\n

Cooke stresses the film is a queer movie. \u201cThere aren\u2019t that many movies of these films about lesbians. It\u2019s important that it\u2019s a queer movie and important that it doesn\u2019t take itself too seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coen is directing \u201cDrive-Away Dolls\u201d from a script he co-wrote and produced with Cooke.<\/p>\n
