\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d actor Indira Varma is joining the new series of \u201cDoctor Who.\u201d<\/p>\n

She will be seen as the Duchess, described by the BBC as a \u201cmysterious new role.\u201d Varma was previously part of the \u201cDoctor Who\u201d universe as Suzie Costello in Russell T Davies\u2019 spin-off series \u201cTorchwood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Varma\u2019s recent roles include Netflix show \u201cObsession\u201d and Disney+\u2019s Star Wars franchise series \u201cObi-Wan Kenobi.\u201d She won an Olivier for her role in \u201cPresent Laughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctor Who\u201d began in 1963 and follows the adventures of a Time Lord known as The Doctor, an extraterrestrial being with a human appearance. The Doctor travels the universe in a time-travelling spaceship called the Tardis.<\/p>\n

Jodie Whittaker, the 13th Doctor in the series, regenerated last year,\u00a0revealing David Tennant, who was the 10th Doctor, as the 14th Doctor.\u00a0The series returns in November, with Tennant as the Doctor, with three special episodes to coincide with the show\u2019s 60th anniversary.<\/p>\n

The next Doctor,\u00a0played by \u201cSex Education\u201d star\u00a0Ncuti Gatwa, will take control of the Tardis after Tennant. Gatwa\u2019s first episode as the 15th Doctor will air over the festive period.<\/p>\n

Jinkx Monsoon, winner of the fifth season of \u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u201d and the seventh season of \u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race All Stars,\u201d has also\u00a0been added to the cast as has \u201cGlee\u201d star Jonathan Groff.<\/p>\n

Varma said: \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be in \u2018Doctor Who\u2019 and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him. I loved playing Suzie Costello for Russell T Davies in \u2018Torchwood\u2019 so am thrilled to be entering this world again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Showrunner Russell T Davies added: \u201cI\u2019m overjoyed to be reunited with Indira after our \u2018Torchwood\u2019 days, and this part is truly spectacular. A whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctor Who\u201d will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the U.K. and Ireland. Disney+ will be the exclusive home for new seasons of \u201cDoctor Who\u201d outside of the U.K. and Ireland.<\/p>\n
