One of the most talked-about titles at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival isn\u2019t a movie, but a TV show. \u201cThe Idol,\u201d a scandalous, sexy and sure-to-be-polarizing series (think \u201cEuphoria\u201d but set in the world of pop music) about the price of fame, premiered the first two of its five episodes at the festival and instantly inspired a thousand hot takes about all that on-screen nudity, bodily fluids and Hollywood sycophants.<\/p>\n

But before \u201cThe Idol\u201d \u2014 the brainchild of \u201cEuphoria\u201d creator Sam Levinson and Abel \u201cThe Weeknd\u201d Tesfaye \u2014 even made its way to the Croisette, an explosive report by Rolling Stone detailed on-set turmoil,\u00a0including allegations of a toxic work environment, last-minute script rewrites and budgets gone wild.<\/p>\n

At a press conference on Tuesday, the day after the premiere, Levinson responded directly to the allegations and denied the behind-the-scenes drama. \u201cWhen my wife read me the article,\u201d he recalled, \u201cI looked at her and I said, \u2018I think we\u2019re about to have the biggest show of the summer.’\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cWe know we\u2019re making a show that is provocative. It\u2019s not lost on us.\u201d But as for the allegations in the article, he said, \u201cIt felt completely foreign to me. My only slight is they intentionally omitted anything that didn\u2019t fit their narrative. We\u2019ve seen a lot of that recently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tesfaye said earlier in the press conference that he and Levinson were aiming to \u201ccreate something special, something fun, to make people laugh, piss some people off.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s star, Lily-Rose Depp, also pushed back against the accusations of chaos and stood by Levinson, saying \u201cIt\u2019s always a little sad and disheartening to see mean false things said about someone you care about. It wasn\u2019t reflective at all of my experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Idol\u201d puts the spotlight on Depp, who plays Jocelyn, a pop phenom coming off a psychotic break after the death of her mother. As she tries to get a new album and tour off the ground, she goes to a seedy Hollywood club to blow off steam. That\u2019s where she meets the Weeknd\u2019s Tedros, a modern-day cult leader who reveals larger ambitions for Jocelyn\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to make a dark, twisted fantasy about the music industry,\u201d Tesfaye said. \u201cTo take everything I know about it and heighten it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levinson, clearly no stranger to provocation, also defended the \u201crevolutionary\u201d use of nudity in the show. A funny scene in the pilot even sends up the need for intimacy coordinators, who became more prevalent in the entertainment industry in the wake of #MeToo.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in a very sexualized world. Especially in the States, the influence of pornography is strong in the psyche of young people. We see this in pop music,\u201d Levinson said. \u201cWhen you have a character who has a strong sense of self and a strong sexual self, you end up underestimating her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Depp called Jocelyn a \u201cborn and bred performer,\u201d meaning that nudity is important to the genesis of the character. \u201cThat extends to every aspect of her life, not just her professional life,\u201d she said. \u201cThe way she dresses is trying to tell you something all the time. The occasional bareness of the character physically mirrors the bareness we get to see emotionally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hank Azaria, who plays Jocelyn\u2019s manager Chaim, joked that he became protective of Depp when she was scantily dressed on set. \u201cI was trying to throw blankets on her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Idol\u201d references in the pilot episode the media\u2019s intense scrutiny of music icons like Britney Spears. Levinson denied, though, that Jocelyn is inspired by Spears, whom he calls \u201cone of the greatest pop stars of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not trying to tell a story about any particular pop star,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re looking more at how the world perceives pop stars and the pressure it puts on that individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Depp believes the great tragedy about the price of fame is that everyday people imagine they know more about celebrities than they actually do. \u201cSomething that was interesting about exploring the character is: What is going on inside her head? Someone who is so watched but not seen\u2026 What does it look like when she unravels?\u201d<\/p>\n

Depp may be playing someone who is still figuring it all out, but Tesfaye portrays a man with a mission. He described his character as \u201cDracula,\u201d who is \u201cluring\u201d Jocelyn into his orbit. He laughed when he was asked by a journalist if he\u2019d ever met someone like Tedros in real life. \u201cI don\u2019t fucking think so.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levinson chimed in, \u201cIf you had, I don\u2019t think you\u2019d be here.\u201d<\/p>\n
