He was born on February 22, 1965, in New York City, and raised in the East Harlem neighborhood, where he was exposed to the rawness and complexities of urban life, which would later influence his works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephen Adly Guirgis graduated from University at Albany. He started his career in theater as an actor and co-artistic director of the LAByrinth Theater Company. As a playwright, Guirgis has written numerous plays, including &#8220;Our Lady of 121st Street,&#8221; &#8220;Jesus Hopped the &#8216;A&#8217; Train,&#8221; &#8220;The Last Days of Judas Iscariot,&#8221; and &#8220;Between Riverside and Crazy,&#8221; which won him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guirgis&#8217;s works often explore complex themes and issues of race, religion, morality, and redemption in a gritty and realistic way, drawing from his own experiences and his work as an educator in prisons, shelters, schools, and hospitals for conflict resolution and HIV\/AIDS prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is also known for his collaborations with notable directors and actors, including Philip Seymour Hoffman, who directed the world premiere of &#8220;Jesus Hopped the &#8216;A&#8217; Train&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conclusion, Stephen Adly Guirgis is a prolific and accomplished American playwright, screenwriter, director, actor, and educator who has made significant contributions to the theater community and beyond.
