Musician and actor Lily Allen has defended \u201cnepo babies\u201d \u2013 a term for children of famous parents \u2013 and accused the entertainment industry of causing \u201cchildhood trauma\u201d due to its unfriendliness towards working parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe nepo babies y\u2019all should be worrying about are the ones working for legal firms, the ones working for banks, and the ones working in politics, if we\u2019re talking about real world consequences and robbing people of opportunity,\u201d Allen tweeted. \u201cBUT that\u2019s none of my business.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to her own tweet she added: \u201cAnd before you come at me for being a nepo baby myself, I will be the first to tell you that I literally deserve nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the disclaimer, her tweets on the subject prompted many to point out that Allen, whose parents are \u201cTrainspotting\u201d actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen, has benefited from her industry connections.<\/p>\n

Allen has appeared in two of her mother\u2019s films, \u201cElizabeth,\u201d starring Cate Blanchett, in which she played a lady-in-waiting, and more recently \u201cHow to Build a Girl.\u201d According to IMDb, her first on-screen appearances as a child were background roles in projects that starred her father, including TV show \u201cThe Comic Strip Presents\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Allen\u2019s brother Alfie, also an actor who has worked alongside his family, played Theon Greyjoy in \u201cGame of Thrones.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to one Twitter user who asked \u201cWhy are your parents blue links on Wikipedia[?]\u201d Allen replied: \u201cBecause I\u2019m a nepo baby, and both my parents are super talented.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Allen, who shot to fame with her music in the mid-2000s before pivoting to acting, went on to imply that life isn\u2019t always perfect for the offspring of entertainment industry figures given the industry is \u201cnot parent friendly.\u201d \u201cIn childhood we crave stability and love, nurturing,\u201d she tweeted. \u201cWe don\u2019t care about money or proximity to power yet. Many of the nepo babies are starved of these basic things in childhood as their parents are probably narcissistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[A]nd entertainment business is not parent friendly eg. Touring\/ months away shooting. It can be hard to see one\u2019s own privilege when you\u2019re still processing childhood trauma, and a lot of these kids haven\u2019t figured that out yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The peripatetic and long-hours culture of the entertainment industry has long been a contentious issue for those with caring responsibilities, both above and below the line. Last year a \u201cKeeping Families in Film\u201d campaign was launched by \u201cPeaky Blinders\u201d star Charlotte Riley, who is also responsible for setting up the U.K.\u2019s first dedicated on-site childcare facility at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.<\/p>\n

The campaign was supported by stars including Keira Knightley, Cillian Murphy and Jodie Whittaker<\/p>\n

Allen, who has two young children, is set to lead her first television series next year alongside Freema Agyeman in Sharon Horgan\u2019s upcoming U.K. comedy-drama \u201cDreamland.\u201d<\/p>\n
