\u201cBarbarian,\u201d a horror movie that may have audiences thinking twice about booking that next Airbnb, scared up a better-than-expected $10 million in its domestic debut.<\/p>\n

Since the box office has been a wasteland for some weeks now, those ticket sales were enough to lead domestic charts, despite barely reaching double digits. This weekend\u2019s other new nationwide release, \u201cBrahmastra Part One: Shiva,\u201d opened in second place with $4.4 million from 810 North American theaters. Both films are backed by Disney.<\/p>\n

Though \u201cBarbarian\u201d landed a tepid \u201cC+\u201d CinemaScore, the twisty thriller is benefitting from word-of-mouth, given the film\u2019s zany and flat-out terrifying turns. Variety\u2019s<\/em> Peter Debruge gave \u201cBarbarian\u201d high praise, calling it \u201ca ratched new horror classic,\u201d one that gets \u201cdownright demented as it goes along.\u201d If \u201cBarbarian,\u201d which stars\u00a0Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd and Justin Long, keeps people talking, the movie is likely to keep filling seats during a creaky September at the box office.<\/p>\n

For an original horror story, David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, refers to the debut as \u201ca good opening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe weekend figure is somewhat above average and reviews are sensational,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are relatively inexpensive and profitable movies that are enjoyed best on a big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

For \u201cBrahm\u0101stra,\u201d the first in a three-part Bollywood film franchise, landing in second place isn\u2019t too shabby since it\u2019s only playing in 800 theaters, far fewer venues than most movies currently in wide release.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrahm\u0101stra:\u00a0Part\u00a0One\u201d takes place in modern-day India and follows\u00a0Shiva\u00a0\u2014 a young man on the brink of an epic love, with a girl named Isha. But their world is turned upside down when\u00a0Shiva\u00a0learns that he has a mysterious connection to a secret society called Brahm\u0101stra.<\/p>\n

In Variety\u2019s<\/em> review, Courtney Howard called the movie \u201cspecial and innovative,\u201d as well as a\u00a0\u201cwildly entertaining jump start to a planned trilogy \u2013 touted as Bollywood\u2019s first original cinematic universe, the \u2018Astraverse.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Sony\u2019s \u201cBullet Train\u201d landed in third place with $3.2 million from 3,056 North American theaters, bringing its domestic tally to $92.5 million.<\/p>\n

At No. 4, Paramount\u2019s enduring blockbuster \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d nabbed $3.17 million in its 16th week on the big screen. For those keeping score at home, Tom Cruise\u2019s blockbuster sequel has remained in the top five on domestic box office charts for 15 weeks of the past 16 weeks. So far, \u201cTop Gun 2\u201d has grossed an astounding $705.6 million in North America and $747.8 million overseas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Invitation\u201d took the fifth slot with $2.6 from 3,117 venues. After three weeks of release, Sony\u2019s creepy thriller film has generated $18 million.<\/p>\n
