\u201cWhy are they coming after me?\u201d Chris Pratt recently asked in a new Men\u2019s Health magazine profile. The \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d and \u201cJurassic World\u201d star was referring to social media users who continue to troll his every move. Pratt connected the hatred he gets on social media to a public misconception about his religious beliefs, which he claims dates back to a speech he gave at the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards.<\/p>\n

Pratt received the award ceremony\u2019s life achievement honor, titled the Generation Award, and said the following line in his acceptance speech: \u201cGod is real. God loves you. God wants the best for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know that I would kind of become the face of religion when really I\u2019m not a religious person,\u201d Pratt told Men\u2019s Health. \u201cI think there\u2019s a distinction between being religious \u2014 adhering to the customs created by man, oftentimes appropriating the awe reserved for who I believe is a very real God \u2014 and using it to control people, to take money from people, to abuse children, to steal land, to justify hatred. Whatever it is. The evil that\u2019s in the heart of every single man has glommed on to the back of religion and come along for the ride.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backlash against Pratt for his religious beliefs intensified due to his alleged involvement with the Hillsong Church, which has long been condemned for being anti-LGBTQ. Elliot Page seemingly slammed Pratt on social media after the actor talked about religion during an appearance on \u201cThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are a famous actor and you belong to an organization that hates a certain group of people, don\u2019t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it\u2019s not addressed,\u201d Page wrote. \u201cBeing anti-LGBTQ is wrong, there aren\u2019t two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pratt responded at the time with his own statement that read: \u201cIt has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which \u2018hates a certain group of people\u2019 and is \u2018infamously anti-LGBTQ.\u2019 Nothing could be further from the truth. I am a man who believes that everyone is entitled to love who they want free from the judgment of their fellow man.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his Men\u2019s Health profile, Pratt clarified the ordeal by saying: \u201cI never went to Hillsong. I\u2019ve never actually been to Hillsong. I don\u2019t know anyone from that church.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked why he never outright denied he belonged to Hillsong prior to the interview, Pratt added, \u201cI\u2019m gonna, like, throw a church under the bus? If it\u2019s like the Westboro Baptist Church, that\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt absolutely infuriates me,\u201d Pratt\u2019s \u201cGuardians\u201d director James Gunn said about the social media vitriol against the actor. \u201cChris is unspeakably kind to people; he goes out of his way to help kids. He\u2019s an especially loving father. And there\u2019s a lot of stuff that people have literally just made up about him \u2014 about his politics, about who he is, about what he believes of other people, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pratt and Gunn are reuniting for \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,\u201d opening in May 2023. The actor can currently be seen in \u201cJurassic World Dominion\u201d and has a supporting role in \u201cThor: Love and Thunder.\u201d Pratt\u2019s new Amazon Prime Video series \u201cThe Terminal List\u201d launches July 1.<\/p>\n
