Dakota Johnson described the making of \u201cFifty Shades of Grey\u201d as \u201cpsychotic\u201d in a new cover story for Vanity Fair magazine. The actor became an international star after being cast as Anastasia \u201cAna\u201d Steele in the three-film franchise, but she said making the trilogy became complicated in part because of \u201cthe author of the books.\u201d That would be E.L. James, who maintained creative control over the film adaptations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI signed up to do a very different version of the film we ended up making,\u201d Johnson said. \u201c[E.L. James] had a lot of creative control, all day, every day, and she just demanded that certain things happen. There were parts of the books that just wouldn\u2019t work in a movie, like the inner monologue, which was at times incredibly cheesy. It wouldn\u2019t work to say out loud. It was always a battle. Always. When I auditioned for that movie, I read a monologue from \u2018Persona\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Oh, this is going to be really special.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson said making the \u201cFifty Shades\u201d trilogy \u201cbecame something crazy,\u201d adding, \u201cThere were a lot of different disagreements. I haven\u2019t been able to talk about this truthfully ever, because you want to promote a movie the right way, and I\u2019m proud of what we made ultimately and everything turns out the way it\u2019s supposed to, but it was tricky.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d do the takes of the movie that [James] wanted to make, and then we would do the takes of the movie that we wanted to make,\u201d Johnson continued. \u201cThe night before, I would rewrite scenes with the old dialogue so I could add a line here and there. It was like mayhem all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even with the battles that took place behind the scenes, Johnson harbors no regret or ill will towards James or the franchise that made her a household name.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had known at the time that\u2019s what it was going to be like, I don\u2019t think anyone would\u2019ve done it,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cIt would\u2019ve been like, \u2018Oh, this is psychotic.\u2019 But no, I don\u2019t regret it\u2026There are things that I still cannot say because I don\u2019t want to hurt anyone\u2019s career and I don\u2019t want to damage anybody\u2019s reputation, but both Jamie [Dornan] and I were treated really well.\u00a0 [James] is a very nice woman, and she was always kind to me and I am grateful she wanted me to be in those movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, it was great for our careers,\u201d Johnson concluded. \u201cSo amazing. So lucky. But it was weird. So, so weird.\u201d<\/p>\n
