E<\/a>than Hawke has signed on to star in Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s next film, \u201cStrange Way of Life,\u201d (\u201cExtra\u00f1a forma de vida\u201d), a half-hour Western.<\/p>\n

The Spanish director will shoot the short before making his English-language feature debut, \u201cA Manual for Cleaning Women,\u201d with Cate Blanchett.<\/p>\n

Hawke stars opposite Chile\u2019s Pedro Pascal, who portrayed Oberyn Martell in \u201cGame of Thrones,\u201d in a film which will be \u201canother exercise of freedom in the line of \u2018The Human Voice,\u2019\u201d said producer Agust\u00edn Almod\u00f3var.<\/p>\n

The short will be shot in English. Set up at El Deseo, the Almod\u00f3var brothers\u2019 Madrid-based production company, \u201cStrange Way of Life\u201d begins with a man, Silva, riding on a horse across a desert to Bitter Creek. He has come to visit Sheriff Jake. 25 years earlier, the two men worked together as hired gunmen.<\/p>\n

Silva comes with the pretext of re-encountering his friend from youth. They celebrate their re-encounter. But the following morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the real reason for his visit isn\u2019t memories of their old friendship\u2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t say any more because I don\u2019t want to reveal all the script\u2019s surprises,\u201d Pedro Almod\u00f3var wrote in a statement issued by El Deseo on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s title, he explained, echoes the title of a famous fado written and sung by Amalia Rodrigues. Its lyrics claim that there\u2019s no stranger existence than one that ignores one\u2019s own desires \u2013 which raises the question as to how much the film could turn on desire, rather than the normal motifs of a Western.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn all his cinema, Pedro reinterprets genres, questioning their codes,\u201d said Agust\u00edn Almod\u00f3var.<\/p>\n

\u201cStrange Way of Life\u201d also stars young promises Jason Fern\u00e1ndez, Jos\u00e9 Condessa, George Steane and Manu R\u00edos, as well as Pedro Casablanc and Sara Sal\u00e1mo.<\/p>\n

It will shoot in the desert of Tabernas in Almer\u00eda, southern Spain, and also in the settlement which Sergio Leone built 50 years ago to shoot his spaghetti Western \u201cDollars\u201d trilogy with Clint Eastwood. El Deseo is also building a ranch near Madrid to film further scenes in the film.<\/p>\n

Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello will oversee costume design and take an associate producer credit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll look to self-finance and recuperate later. This is shot with the freedom we had when we made Super 8 movies in the \u201870s, but with 40 years experience in the sector,\u201d said Agust\u00edn Almod\u00f3var.<\/p>\n
